I think this is a great set.  It has many rookies and future hall of famers.  Besides the rookies, there are many hall of famers such as Nolan Ryan, George Brett, Ozzie Smith and many more.  Here is a rookie rundown.   Barry Bonds, Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro, Bo Jackson, Kevin Brown, Bobby Witt, Wally Joyner, Ruben Sierra and more.  You can still purchase boxes of these cards for $25-$30 on ebay or from sports cards stores if you shop around for a good deal.  Also, if you purchase a rack case you can get an even cheaper cost per equivalent box of cards (around 540 cards per 36 pack regular box).  Factory and hand collated sets are nice too, I have put away a set or two myself for future value.  There also is  mark McGwire rated rookie card in the set, 1985 was his rookie year but this card in this set still books at about $8.  It is a winner and with the black borders, getting the cards in top condition is a chore.
Overall I think this set is a 7 out of 10 on a scale.  It has upside going forward in the future with Maddux and Bonds being great players that will be remembered long after they retire.

Here are some random card pickings from my personal collection:

Here is a 1987 Donruss Diamond Kings Ozzie Smith baseball card, #5 in the set.  It has an illustration of him on the front in a St. Louis Cardinals hat and on the back it describes his career with the San Diego Padres and notes that he was first a Diamond King in the 1982 Donruss set.  This is a neat card from the site.

Here is a Terry Steinbach rated rookie card, #34 in the set.  He was a highly rated player at first but just never caught on the way that the Oakland Athletics were hoping that he would, if I remember how his career went.  He never evolved into a perennial all star player, yet he did have a decent career if I remember correctly.

Here is a Fernando Valenzuela card, #94 in the set.  He is a very famous Los Angeles Dodgers former player and all star and rookie of the year if I am correct.  A neat side note on him is that his certified authentic autographs (I was looking at the Upper Deck catalog) are quite valuable.  He must be a difficult autograph to obtain.  He had so many great seasons with the Dodgers and is a very famous player to say the least.  His picture here is a memorable one on this card as he is in his Dodger blue jacket with a white home jersey in the picture.

Here is a New York Mets card of Howard Johnson, #646 in the set.  Ho-Jo was a popular player on the Mets and although he never became anywhere near a hall of famer, he still had a stellar career.  The blue Mets jersey he is wearing in this picture with a picture of him apparently in a game after finishing a swing is a memorable photo of him.  The quality of these Donruss cards are quite good.

With Greg Maddux just retiring, and Barry Bonds the current home run record holder, this set is poised to be highly sought after even in the years coming soon since a lot of the players may soon be inducted into the hall of fame.  Maddux likely will on the first ballot, with McGwire possibly soon as well, and Barry Bonds might too.  That, along with the other stars and rookies in the set that are highly sought after (even if they are not going to be in the hall of fame) make this set a winner.
